The ultimate test of man’s conscience may be his willingness to sacrifice something for future generations whose words of thanks will not be heard. — Gaylord Nelson, founder of Earth Day
10:10 – 11:00 Daniel from Roosevelt’s Terrariums, https://www.rooseveltspdx.com/ 1510 SE 44th Avenue, Portland tel. 503-734-9996
Daniel Fender, who manages Roosevelt’s Terrariums, gave a fascinating history of the terrarium’s inception and its effect on world economic development, geopolitical changes, medical innovations, and agriculture. British botanist and physician Nathaniel Ward is credited with developing the terrarium in the early 19th century, and the “Wardian case” revolutionized the dissemination of commercially important plants by facilitating the successful shipment of species all over the world.
Roosevelt’s Terrariums, established in 2010, is reportedly the largest terrarium store in the world. Daniel brought a variety of terrariums, plants and planting supplies, and demonstrated the construction of an example project. Classes are offered for individuals, families and groups at the store.
11:05 – 11:15 am Horticulture:
Wendy Young brought in a Peace Lily that she split from its parent plant to share. Marguerite Truttman, one of today’s guests, brought in a Kaffir Lily as well as some snap pea and blue lake bean seeds to share. Roberta Mehta announced that a Rhododendron sale will take place at 2797 Locust St., Canby, on May 2,3, 9, 10, 16 and 17, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Plants are priced at $11, cash only unless 10+ plants are purchased by credit card.
