Never jump in a pile of leaves with a wet lollipop.”

   — Linus, It’s the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown

Speaker:     Nikkie West from Sparrowhawk Natives. Topic: “Resilient Gardening in a Time of Climate Change.” https://sparrowhawknativeplants.com

Nikkie West gave a presentation that covered the inception of Sparrowhawk Natives as a retailer of native plants grown by the business and distributed via “pop-up” events in partnership with non-profit organizations supporting conservation efforts. She described how we in the Pacific Northwest are one of four U.S. migration pathways. We can create havens for species as they migrate, and as they experience climate events that are increasingly variable and longer, due to the earth’s warming.

Business Meeting Agenda

  • Treasurer’s Report: Sandy Platz reported that as of August 25 we have $3542.30 in the treasury.
  • Minutes of the August Meeting: A final draft of the minutes was emailed and stands approved as amended.
  • Fall District Meeting: Will take place Thursday, October 9. Cost is $20. Reservations and money need to be received by Sandy Platz by October 1. Please mail payment to her home at 12524 Bari Ave., Happy Valley OR 97086.

Julie Lund asked for volunteers to produce a fall-themed floral arrangement centerpiece, a gift card for the raffle, and a garden item for the sale table. Leona volunteered her space and arrangement materials, and Shelley Fenton and Sheila Greer volunteered to help. Katherene Kerner and Priscilla Robinson volunteered to help with the raffle.

Instead of a speaker, three round-table discussions will be held to discuss recruitment of new members and programming.

For the Silent Auction, non-material donations are encouraged (each club can contribute one or two items, such as craft lessons, cooking a dinner for four, yoga or pickleball lessons, etc.)

  • Sarah Hite Garden: Priscilla Robinson reported that very few volunteers have shown up this summer. Harry Landers has expressed discouragement, and the project will probably be discontinued.
  • Announcements:

Pat Allen invited everyone to attend a Design Guild event at Mary’s Woods, September 20th at 2 p.m. Debbie Spiller, a Washington-based designer, will be the speaker. Those interested should meet at Leona’s parking lot at 1 p.m. to carpool.

Sheila Greer invited everyone to Kelso Garden Club’s Guest Day, October 17th at 10 a.m. Please RSVP by October 1.

Priscilla Robinson reported that a Master Gardener event will take place October 18, 8:30 to noon, at the Milwaukie Community Center. Soil testing will be available, and there will be three speakers.

  • Reminders:

Next coffee chat will be at Barb Decious’ garden. She will have coffee, tea, plates, and napkins. Goodies are welcome. Address is 6223 Dunbar Drive, Portland.

The October 14th meeting’s hosts will be Rena Ackley, Shelley Fenton, Jan Ferguson-Bresee and Wendy Young.

  • Horticulture:

Barb Decious brought basil to share, Patti Taylor brought a spider plant, and Donna Endicott brought a begonia plant from a two-year-old start.

  • Happy Birthday to our September Birthdays: Pat Allen – 13th , Rita Baker – 11th.
  • Adjournment: The meeting was adjourned at 11:40 a.m.

Respectfully submitted,

Mary Lou Epperson
